Red Velvet is such a fun festive flavor!! It’s mainly made around Christmas and Valentine’s Day so this recipe is perfect for either holiday or honestly any day of the year.
These cookies are day 8 of my 12 days of Christmas cookies series so if you’re coming from there, welcome. I’m super glad you are here and wanting to make these delicious cookies!
If you have no clue to what I’m referring to, no worries! Basically I’ve been doing a video series on my social medias called the “12 days of Christmas cookies series” and these Red velvet cookies are day 8!
So far I’ve done Chocolate Peppermint Cookies, Triple Chip Cookies, Chewy Spice Cookies, Christmas M&M Chocolate Chip Cookies, Hot Cocoa Cookies, Peanut Butter Blossoms, Grinch Sugar Cookies and now these!! Whew, that’s a handful. At least we have plenty of Christmas cookie recipes now to choose from every year! Haha
What is Red Velvet anyway?
The flavor of red velvet is very distinct but also sometimes hard to tell exactly what it is. Basically Red velvet is a slight chocolate flavor and is colored with food dye. It’s pretty simple but SO YUM. It’s paired often with cream cheese frosting which is so delicious.
In this recipe, I added white chocolate chips which add the perfect touch. You can leave out that step and these would still be so good or you could even add another kind of chocolate chip if you want a really chocolatey cookie. (Which, honestly, who doesn’t?)
What you’ll need:
- butter
- sugar
- brown sugar
- eggs
- vanilla extract
- cornstarch
- flour
- cocoa powder
- baking soda
- salt
- white chocolate chips
- red gel food coloring
These cookies are made with unsweetened cocoa to give it that chocolate flavor and brown butter to give your cookies an even deeper flavor.
What is Brown Butter and do I have to use it?
Basically brown butter is just butter that’s been cooked on the stove. It foams up and the milk solids caramelize giving it its delicious deep nutty flavor. It takes a few quick minutes on the stove and the smell is like no other. Let’s just say it’s amazing and it’s a GAME CHANGER when baking. It’s hard to go back once you make it a few times and super simple to make so the extra step is optional but 100% worth it. And yes, you can still make this recipe without using brown butter it just won’t have the nutty flavor but will still be delicious. If you also want the texture to be the same, I would use melted butter because the consistency of brown butter and melted will be the most similar.
