Christmas M&M Chocolate Chip Cookies

November 18, 2022

When you think of Christmas, there are so many things that come to mind. But one of my favorite things about Christmas is baking!! And more specifically, baking cookies!

Growing up my family would always make cookies during the season to decorate and a bunch of Christmasy treats!! We’d always leave cookies and milk out for Santa and wake up eager the next morning to see what he ate!! Such fun memories like this is what makes the season so special!

The Perfect Christmas cookie. Anyone else drooling?

These cookies are day 4 of my 12 days of Christmas cookie series!! If you’ve been following along, thank you so much! I love having you here!! If you have no clue what I’m referring to, I’ve been doing a video series on my socials where I create fun, delicious christmas cookies recipes to share with you during the weeks and days leading up to Christmas.

It’s called 12 days of Christmas cookies and this cookie is cookie number four so be sure to go follow along so you don’t miss out! So far I’ve done Chocolate Peppermint Cookies, Triple Chip Cookies, Chewy Spice Cookies and now these brown butter christmas m&m chocolate chip cookies.

Brown butter, chocolate and m&ms? Can a cookie get much better?

What you’ll need:

  • butter
  • sugar
  • brown sugar
  • eggs
  • vanilla extract
  • flour
  • cornstarch
  • baking soda
  • salt
  • chocolate chips
  • chocolate chunks
  • christmas m&ms
  • mini christmas m&ms
  • flaky sea salt

What is brown butter and do I have to use it?

Basically brown butter is just butter that’s been cooked on the stove. It foams up and the milk solids caramelize giving it its delicious deep nutty flavor. It takes a few quick minutes on the stove and the smell is like no other. Let’s just say it’s amazing and it’s a GAME CHANGER when baking. It’s hard to go back. It’s super simple to make so the extra step is optional but 100% worth it. And yes, you can still make this recipe without using brown butter it just won’t have the nutty flavor but will still be delicious. If you also want the texture to be the same, i would use melted butter because the consistency of brown butter and melted will be the most similar.

I am SO excited for you guys to try out these cookies. If you’ve been looking for a staple chocolate chip cookie recipe, I really hope these become it and that you love them as much as I do. With pools of dark choclate and the festive m&ms sometimes I wonder if it gets much better than this?

To get my cookies to be super round and all the same shape, I like using a round glass, a biscuit cutter or cookie cutter to the lid of a mason jar!! It’s definitely not required but just a fun little tip, I like to use. I’ll share a link HERE to some on amazon if you’d like to try out this simple yet effective baking hack.

Alrighty now, let’s get started:

Ingredients Method

Ingredients

  • 1 cup butter browned
  • 1 cup brown sugar
  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • 2 eggs
  • 1 tbsp vanilla extract
  • 2 3/4 cup flour
  • 2 tbsp cornstarch
  • 1 tbsp baking soda
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1/2 cup chocolate chips I used dark
  • 1/2 cup chocolate chunks I used dark
  • 1 cup christmas m&ms + some for top
  • 1 cup mini christmas m&ms + some for top
  • flaky sea salt for top, optional

Method

  1. Pre-heat your oven to 350° F and line your baking sheets with parchment paper.
  2. In a sauce pan over medium high heat, add your butter and let melt. Once it's melted keep it on the heat and let it cook for 5-10 minutes until it foams up and then turns brown. Let cool.
  3. In a large bowl add your sugar and brown sugar and whisk it up. Slowly pour in your brown butter and mix again. Next add your eggs and vanilla and stir again until well combined.
  4. Add your dry ingredients to this mixture and fold until incorporated. Dough should be soft in texture. Next, add your chocolate chips, chunks, christmas m&ms and mini christmas m&ms and fold until just combined.
  5.  Scoop your cookie dough into 1-2 inch balls onto your baking sheets lined with parchment paper a couple inches apart. Top with extra chocolate chips and m&ms and place in the oven for 8-10 minutes at 350° F.
  6. Remove from oven and top with flaky sea salt and extra chocolate and m&ms if you'd like. Let cool, share and enjoy!!

Is it supposed to be 1 tablespoon of baking soda? Mine came out so dry 🙁

Awh I’m so sorry. You can cut down the baking soda amount. If your cookies are too dry you can also add 1/4 cup less flour and underbake for a more gooey cookie.
