Apple Pie Homemade Poptarts

Apple Pie Poptarts are crispy and flavorful and the perfect fall treat. It’s made with flaky pie crust and spicy apple pie filling making it a warm and cozy autumn dessert. They’re easy to make and perfect for a fall party or cozy fall night.

Baking during the fall is one of my favorite things ever. I love that the passion for baking grows during this time of year and so many people are inspired to bake. Baking season is here and I’m so thankful.

Apple Pie Homemade Poptarts

One of the reason fall baking and fall desserts are my favorite is because the flavors and smells. Pumpkin is amazing and one of my favorites but I also love, apple, maple, brown sugar, and cinnamon, of course!!

The flavors of fall are delicious and cozy and feel like a warm hug. The combinations and textures are endless in what you could make. I love recipes that use cinnamon because they make my house smell like Cinnabon and who wouldn’t love that?

These Apple Pie Homemade Poptarts are made up of three components: the pie crust, apple pie filling and the glaze. Let’s dive into each one:

Pie crust may seem intimidating to make but I promise this recipe is so easy and doable for any level baker!! It’s made up of only a few ingredients and takes a couple minutes to mix together. The crust comes out flaky, butter and so flavorful. It’s the perfect crust for any pie, galette or poptart recipe.

For the apple pie filling, you start with chopped apples and add the rest of the ingredients from there. Then you cook them slowly on the stove until they start to become soft. Think apple pie filling, but even easier. This filling goes in between two layers of the pie crust and then brushed with a simple egg wash before baking.

Then of course once your hand pies have cooled you top them off with a simple glaze made with milk and powdered sugar. It finishes these apple pie pop tarts off perfectly. There you have it, Homemade Apple Pie Poptarts!!

This recipe is perfect for fall and would be super good to make for your neighbors or co-workers, your family members or with your kids. They would be so fun to make with your lover for a cozy fall movie night or you could even bring them to a trip to the pumpkin patch. They would also be such a fun autumn treat to make for a festive party or game day. Even for Thanksgiving breakfast these would be gone so fast. Honestly any time!!

I love creating a list of all the ingredients you will need to make my recipe on the post before the recipe. That way you can clearly see everything you’ll need and what you may need to go grab at the store to make them.

What You’ll Need:

  • cold butter
  • sugar
  • salt
  • flour (all purpose)
  • vinegar
  • ice water
  • vanilla extract
  • brown sugar
  • cinnamon
  • Granny Smith apples
  • cornstarch
  • lemon or orange juice
  • water
  • heavy whipping cream
  • egg
  • milk
  • powdered sugar
  • parchment paper

All the ingredients are very simple and easy to find at your local grocery store OR already in your kitchen ready to go. They are simple ingredients but together make such a delicious fun recipe and I’m so excited for you to try them out.

Ingredients Method

Ingredients
  

For Pie Crust:
  • 2 cups flour
  • 1 cup cold butter cubed
  • 2 tbsp sugar
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1 tsp vinegar
  • 5-8 tbsp ice water
  • + flour for rolling
For Apple Pie Filling:
  • 4 Granny Smith apples peeled & cubed
  • ¼ tbsp brown sugar
  • dash of cinnamon
  • 1 tbsp cornstarch
  • 1 tbsp lemon or orange juice
  • 1 tbsp water
  • 1 tsp vanilla
For Egg Wash:
  • ¼ cup heavy whipping cream
  • 1 egg
For Glaze:
  • ¼ cup milk
  • 2 cups powdered sugar

Method
 

For Pie Crust:
  1. In a large bowl add your flour, sugar, salt, & cold cubed butter and using a pastry cutter or fork, combine it together. It will take a bit of mixing before it comes together. You can also use your hands to help break up butter.
  2. Once your mixture is combined and crumbly, add your vinegar and then your ice water 2 tbsps at a time mixing in between each one.
  3. When your dough comes together, form it into a disk or 2 and wrap in plastic wrap to chill for 30 minutes.
For Apple Pie Filling:
  1. In a sauce pan over medium heat, add your cubed apples, brown sugar, lemon juice, water, cornstarch, vanilla extract and cinnamon.
  2. Stir continuously until your apples soften and start to brown.
  3. Remove from heat and let cool.
Assembling:
  1. Preheat your oven to 350° F and line your baking sheets with parchment paper.
  2. Roll out your pie crust on a floured surface using a rolling pin and cut into even rectangles.
  3. Place on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper and fill with a spoonful of your apple pie filling.
  4. Top with another rectangle of pie dough and use a fork to seal the edges.
  5. Whisk together your heavy whipping cream and 1 egg until combined and brush over each hand pie.
  6. Continue with the rest of your dough and apple pie filling.
  7. Bake at 350°F for 10-15 minutes until golden brown. Remove from oven and let cool.
For Glaze:
  1. To make the glaze add your milk and your powdered sugar into a large measuring cup and whisk together.
  2. If you glaze is too thin add more powdered sugar and if it’s too thick add a splash more of Belfonte milk.
  3. Drizzle over the top of your hand pies once they’ve cooled and enjoy!!
